If you want to socialize with friends and relatives, you can use an instant messaging application – like Yahoo! Messenger or Windows Live Messenger. The application that can help in this situation is Softros LAN Messenger. This application does just what its name suggests – it is a Messenger that can be used on your LAN.

It installs in a very short time and can run on most versions of Windows without problems, ranging from XP to Windows 7. It takes up little system resources and little hard disk space.

The interface resembles the ones of most instant messengers, thus being easy to use by most users. When the program is launched, it first checks for computers on the network who have the software installed and displays them as a drop-down list. At this point, the user can click on any of them and can start chatting.

Softros LAN Messenger features a history window that can display all the past conversations. It also allows simple file transfers between all the users on the network who are running this software.

It's very easy to use and doesn't require a server, it only requires installing it on every computer on the network. Besides that, it allows file transfer between network computers. Furthermore, it features a history window, which displays all the past conversations.

Cons:
It has to be installed on every computer in the network and this can be an inconvenient if we are talking about a large network.
